UNDERSTANDING THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE GIFT
If there is a single reason that I was able to bring laughter and fun into the Rainer home, it was because of my perspective of the gift.
Please allow me to explain.
When I treated my sons as shamelessly as I told above, I did not get the perspective of the gift. But many times I did.
The first perspective is the gift of life. This brief time on earth escapes so quickly. God has put us here for but a few moments to enjoy the gift of life and to bring glory to Him. It seems that I have blinked my eyes, and those three preschool sons are now grown married men.
I must grasp fully that life is brief and it is a gift from God. It is to be a gift that we celebrate. When I have that perspective, I am a father and husband of joy and laughter. I am delighted with life and enjoy it to the fullest.
There is a second perspective to the gift. From the time I was a child, I wanted children. God has allowed me to see my boys as incredible gifts from Him. Thatâs why I show such delight in them. Thatâs why I have so much laughter when I am around them. I know that God does not bless everyone with the gift of children, and I am no more deserving than the childless couple. That is why they are gifts. Grace-filled gifts.
I wish every father could read these next few lines. Men, our children are more important than our work. They are more important than our days on the golf course or hours in front of the television. The legacy we leave is not how much money we earned or what level of status we received. The legacy we leave is our children. Take delight in them. Have joy in them. Laugh with them.
